Eucharistic Ministers

Eucharistic Ministers, also known as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, are lay Catholics who help priests distribute the Eucharist during Mass. They may also deliver communion to the sick or homebound. 


Responsibilities 

  • Distributing the Eucharist during Mass
  • Bringing communion to the sick or homebound
  • Serving at weddings, funerals, and Holy Day liturgies

Selection and training

  • The pastor selects Eucharistic Ministers, and the bishop grants them a license to serve 
  • Eucharistic Ministers must be baptized, confirmed, and receive the Eucharist 
  • They should be in a state of grace and fully initiated into the Church's sacramental life 
  • They should be willing to commit to ongoing faith and ministry formation 

Preparation 

  • They should prepare for their service with prayer and scripture reading
  • They should dress appropriately, such as in a suit and tie or a dress shirt and pants

Ministry

  • They should be comfortable establishing relationships with communicants 
  • They should be visible signs of faith, hope, and love to all parishioners
