Lectors
A lector in the Catholic Church is a Catholic who reads the Bible at Mass. They may also lead prayers and Psalms. The role of a lector is to make the Word of God present to the congregation.
Responsibilities
- Read the first and second readings at Mass
- Lead the Psalm if there is no cantor
- Lead the Prayers of the Faithful if there is no deacon
Qualifications
- Be a fully initiated and practicing Catholic
- Have a strong faith and believe the Bible is the Word of God
- Be of good character
Preparation
- Practice the readings so they are understood and conveyed with authenticity
- Prepare through prayer, study, and reflection
Conduct
- Dress appropriately for the role
- Maintain a prayerful disposition
- Read clearly and audibly so the congregation can hear and understand the Word of God
- Use pauses, changes in voice volume, and emphasis to convey the message
